Please note: The following suggestions are all optional and not required under the New Jersey State Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and Harassment in the Workplace. Please see the New Jersey State Policy for more specific details.

You may wish to consider the following suggestions:

1. If practical, confront your harasser with your complaint and explain why the action or comment is offensive. Say it firmly, without smiling and without apologizing.
2. Keep records– write a journal on this issue, record the facts on a tape recorder, or tell a friend in confidence. Keep track of dates, places, times, witnesses, and the nature of the harassment. Save any letters, cards, or notes in a secure place, preferably at home. Bear in mind that documents may be used in litigation.
3. Tell the harasser, in writing, that you object to this behavior. Describe the specific things which offend or upset you. Treat this letter as a confidential piece of communication and keep a copy of it.

5. If harassment does not stop after taking these steps, or if initial harassment is so dangerous as to require immediate action, then a complaint should be initiated. To initiate a complaint, contact the Office of Employment Equity and Affirmative Action here: /affirmaction/complaint-processing-forms/

6. Sexual harassment creates a hostile environment even if it is not directed at you. If you observe harassment, consider reaching out privately to the target of harassment to see if they need support or if they are interested in reporting themselves.

The form may be filled out anonymously, or you may choose to include identifying information. Submissions are read and responded to during regular business hours.
