Carolyn Merkel

Carolyn Merkel’ 78, Consultant, Mariner Analytical LLC

Dr. Merkel owns Mariner Analytical, a consulting firm for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries.  Prior to starting her business, she worked for McNeil Nutritionals (J&J) with the team that developed the low-calorie sweetener, Splenda, as well as at Pepsi.  She is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Institute of Food Technologists and Sigma Xi, the scientific honor society.  Dr. Merkel is a recipient of the YWCA Tribute to Women in Industry award.   She has been an assistant troop leader for the Girl Scouts.  Carolyn is now the former President of the Alumni Association board.  She serves on the School of Theoretical and Applied Science alumni advisory board and is former chair.  Dr. Merkel was honored as a Distinguished Citizen in 2003 and was awarded the President’s Award of Merit in 2004.   She earned a B.S. in Chemistry from 69É«ÇéÊÓƵ, an M.S. in technology management from NJIT and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Columbia University. She is a Certified Food Scientist.
