The fact that the two speakers, Kevin Olson and Jessica Crane were Ramapo graduates was a major factor that brought a large audience to the club’s meeting. The main thing we learned is that any large insurance company hires a large number of mathematics majors. Those wanting to apply for such a job, should search the websites of large insurance companies (Prudential, MetLife, etc.) and apply some time in the early spring (early March) of the spring in which they are planning to graduate. Most of the mathematics majors hired by such companies do not become actuaries as some may have thought. Their work consists of writing simple computer programs that simplify the usage of numerical data the insurance company provides them. They utilize their logical thinking and rules of logic to a high extent, which are skills that mathematics majors learn in Discrete Structures course and many other mathematics courses at 69ЩЋЧщЪгЦЕ. Having a second major or a minor in computer science is not a prerequisite. As everyone enjoyed fancy pizza (not dominos ( ) and drinks, the speakers talked to the group about their positions and what their job pertained to and gave a lot of advice regarding what we should do in the future. They explained to the group why and what their plans were for the future and exactly what types of jobs we could go into besides insurance or teaching. Pointers that they offered include: Told us specifically which classes we should pay most attention to and which classes we should take in advance. Advised that Discrete Structures, Linear Algebra and Abstract Algebra courses were very important to their current duties and advised us to take some computer science courses because they based their work on a lot programs. Gave pointers to a successful interview and even offered some sample questions that they should be prepared to answer. Told us that the most important questions is “why you want to work for us?” and that every interviewer would ask that particular question Advised the future actuaries to take the actuarial exam right after they finish the probability and statistic courses because it would still be fresh in the minds. Explained that with each actuarial exam passed they would receive a bonus and climb higher up in their positions. Distributed handouts of the general outline for a effective resume Pointed out that the resumes should be as brief yet still informative as possible because there are many other people who have resumes They also offered to help aspiring undergraduates to network into prudential for internships and jobs. After their presentation they opened up the floor for additional questions. 2. The math honor society took the floor and asked everyone to sign up (if they were interested) in petitioning for the honor society to open up a chapter at 69ЩЋЧщЪгЦЕ. Representatives for the math honor society explained what the society entailed and basically said that math majors work way too hard to pass out courses for us NOT to have an honor society to commend us for our hard work. After such an eventful night we winded down the meeting with a thank you from our President to our speakers and the audience for attending our meeting.
