After having some pizza and soft drinks, the members discussed different suggestions for possible activities of the math club. The club offered to invite speakers to talk about topics in math and other fields. A suggestion was made to invite an actuary and a high school teacher so that math club members could hear about the practical uses of mathematics. There was a suggestion to substitute the year end part for a trip to the Liberty Science Center some time in November. Members were really excited about this idea and e-board is working on putting this idea into action. Math club members are required to do community service in order for the club to exist. There are two available options: on-campus and off-campus volunteering. The on-campus community service consists of either group study tutoring or tutoring math students from upper level classes only so that we do not interfere with the math tutors from the Center for Academic Success. Volunteers have to tutor only an hour and are allowed to leave if no one shows up in half an hour. Four students volunteered to tutor Mondays from 3:40 to 2:30 for the Intro to Analysis class. Other volunteers are also welcomed. If anyone else is also available to tutor any other upper level math courses please email Dr. Potocka for further information. The off-campus community service consists of tutoring middle school students through the Community Outreach Program, Brae Community Center in Mahwah. The Math Club will attend different math competitions throughout the year. For further information regarding the nation-wide math competition you should email Dr. Potocka at kpotocka@ramapo.edu . The Math Club will also attend the NJ Math Competition in the Spring. Math club members solved one math competition problem. After the meeting, we played Math Pictionary and the A team won by a point. The tie breaker was the word Algebra (very funny and clever drawings were drawn).
