Do Something.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"row colSet\">\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \">\n<h4>SEE SOMETHING<\/h4>\n<p>RCNJ faculty and staff are in a unique position to recognize and demonstrate compassion for students in distress.<\/p>\n<p>Students may feel <em>alone<\/em>, <em>isolated<\/em>, and even <em>hopeless<\/em> when faced with challenges in their academic and personal lives. These feelings can disrupt academic performance and lead to dysfunctional coping and other serious consequences.<\/p>\n<p>You may be the first person to see something distressing in a student if you have frequent and prolonged contact with them. As members of the RCNJ community, it is important that we act with kindness and understanding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \">\n<h4>SAY SOMETHING<\/h4>\n<p>Students exhibiting troubling behaviors in your presence are likely having difficulties in other areas of their lives, including the classroom, with roommates, with family, and even in social settings.<\/p>\n<p>Trust your instincts and say something if a student leaves you feeling worried, alarmed, or threatened.<\/p>\n<h4>DO SOMETHING<\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes students cannot, or will not, turn to family, friends or others for help. Doing something, like expressing concern and\/or informing a student of services available to them may be a critical factor in saving a student\u2019s academic career or even their life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4>WHAT ABOUT PRIVACY?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Observations of a student\u2019s conduct or statements made by a student are not protected by FERPA.<\/strong> Such information can be shared with college administrators, Public Safety or Counseling Services to promote student and campus safety.<\/p>\n<p>Consideration for a student\u2019s privacy should always be given before information is shared. When communicating with a student, it is important to use the language \u201cprivate and discrete\u201d rather than \u201cconfidential,\u201d as you may need to share information with those resources listed in this document.<\/p>\n<div class=\"divider\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/rcnjrd\/images\/icons\/ramapo-arch-icom_rule.png\" alt=\"Ramapo\" \/><\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"s2\"><\/a>Indicators of Distress<\/h3>\n<p>Use the following chart to identify a student in distress. Look for clusters of concerns, frequency, duration and severity \u2013 not just indicators in isolation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row colSet\">\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \">\n<div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-12 \"><div class=\"boxTitle\">Academic Indicators<\/div><div class=\"boxContent\">\n<ul>\n<li>Sudden decline in quality of work and grades<\/li>\n<li>Repeated absences<\/li>\n<li>Bizarre content in writing or presentations<\/li>\n<li>Multiple requests for extensions, incomplete assignments or failure to turn in work<\/li>\n<li>Overly demanding of faculty or staff time and attention<\/li>\n<li>You find yourself providing more personal support than academic support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \">\n<div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-12 \"><div class=\"boxTitle\">Physical Indicators<\/div><div class=\"boxContent\">\n<ul>\n<li>Marked changes in physical appearance (e.g., grooming, hygiene, weight loss\/gain)<\/li>\n<li>Excessive fatigue, appears listless or frequently nodding off<\/li>\n<li>Intoxication\/high or smelling of alcohol\/cannabis<\/li>\n<li>Disoriented or appears \u201cout of it\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Garbled, tangential, unusual, or slurred speech<\/li>\n<li>Behavior is out of context or bizarre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row colSet\">\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \">\n<div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-12 \"><div class=\"boxTitle\">Psychological Indicators<\/div><div class=\"boxContent\">\n<ul>\n<li>Self-disclosure of personal distress (e.g., family or financial challenges, grief)<\/li>\n<li>Talk of suicide, either directly or indirectly<\/li>\n<li>Unusual or disproportionate emotional response to events<\/li>\n<li>Excessive tearfulness, panic, irritability, or apathy<\/li>\n<li>Expressions of concern from peers<\/li>\n<li>Delusions and paranoia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \">\n<div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-12 \"><div class=\"boxTitle\">Safety Risk Indicators<\/div><div class=\"boxContent\">\n<ul>\n<li>Verbal abuse (e.g., taunting, badgering, intimidation)<\/li>\n<li>Unprovoked anger or hostility<\/li>\n<li>Communicating threats via email, by text or phone<\/li>\n<li>Physical violence (e.g., shoving, grabbing, assault, display of weapons)<\/li>\n<li>Implying or making threat to harm self or others<\/li>\n<li>Academic assignments dominated by themes of hopelessness, rage, worthlessness, isolation, despair, suicide, or violent behaviors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"divider\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/rcnjrd\/images\/icons\/ramapo-arch-icom_rule.png\" alt=\"Ramapo\" \/><\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"s3\"><\/a>Response Protocol<\/h3>\n<p>Select the answer to determine who to contact when supporting a student in distress:<\/p>\n<h4>Is the student a danger to self or others? It is important to engage the student and relay your concerns. Be mindful of the student\u2019s background, identity, and culture, as well as your own. Listen patiently, withhold judgement, and allow for silences if the student is slow to respond. The tips and questions outlined below can help guide a difficult conversation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row colSet\">\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-8\">\n<h4>STAY SAFE<\/h4>\n<p>If there is imminent danger to you, the student, or someone else, call Public Safety at 201-684-6666 or 911.<\/p>\n<h4>TAKE YOUR TIME<\/h4>\n<p>Actively listen to the student\u2019s concerns and consider how you might be able to help. Choose an appropriate place or situation for having this conversation.<\/p>\n<h4>STAY CALM<\/h4>\n<p>Take a few deep breaths to calm yourself. Use a calm voice when talking and asking questions.<\/p>\n<h4>USE ACTIVE LISTENING<\/h4>\n<p>Make eye contact and give your full attention. Restate what the student says to make sure you understand what is causing the distress (e.g., \u201cAs I listen to you, I hear you saying&#8230;\u201d).<\/p>\n<h4>ASK DIRECT QUESTIONS<\/h4>\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to directly ask the student if they are having thoughts of dying by suicide or harming others. By asking questions you are not introducing the thought.<\/p>\n<div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-12  redBox\"><div class=\"boxContent\">\n<p><strong>If you are concerned for your own or others\u2019 safety, do not hesitate to call Public Safety at (201) 684-6666.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sColumn col-sm-12 col-md-12 \">\n<div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-12  whiteBox\"><div class=\"boxTitle\">Responding Tips<\/div><div class=\"boxContent\">\n<h4>SAY WHAT YOU SEE<\/h4>\n<p>Be direct. Let the student know that you\u2019ve noticed a change and you want to talk.<\/p>\n<h4>HEAR THEM OUT<\/h4>\n<p>Be there to listen and be fully present. As an active listener, be curious and ask appropriate follow-up questions.<\/p>\n<h4>KNOW YOUR ROLE<\/h4>\n<p>Set clear boundaries and connect students to those who can meet their needs. You are the bridge. Remember you are not a confidential resource but honor their privacy as best as possible.<\/p>\n<h4>CONNECT TO HELP<\/h4>\n<p>Determine whether the student needs immediate support and refer them to the appropriate resources.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"divider\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/rcnjrd\/images\/icons\/ramapo-arch-icom_rule.png\" alt=\"Ramapo\" \/><\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"s6\"><\/a>Educational Resources<\/h3>\n<p>Counseling Services has created an optional syllabus statement for faculty to include to connect students to vital resources for their mental health and academic success.<\/p>\n<p>Counseling Services also offers two suicide prevention trainings for the Ramapo community. Because stress is a normal part of the college experience, learning to manage stress effectively is crucial to your well-being and overall success. Counseling Services staff utilizes experiential exercises, including an emphasis on acknowledging and working with gatekeepers own fears about suicide. This training helps users:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify people at risk for suicide<\/li>\n<li>Recognize the risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs of suicide<\/li>\n<li>Respond to and get help for people at risk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This program takes about 20 minutes to complete. It is intended to be educational rather than therapeutic, and it must be completed in one sitting. Logging in and out of the program may cancel your progress and prevent you from obtaining your certificate of completion.<\/p>\n<p>Ask, Listen, Refer can be facilitated in-person. If you are requesting the facilitation to occur after 5 pm, please partner with at least one other organization for the facilitation to be approved.
