This type of experiential learning is a core value of the college and an integral component of a student\u2019s academic career. Guided by faculty and an on-site supervisor, co-op students work 10 \u2013 20 hours per week for 15 weeks. We use the following criteria developed by NACE to ensure a legitimate, educational experience for our students.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"btn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/internships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NACE Internship Criteria<\/a><\/h4>\n<h3>Faculty Advisors will:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Approve\/disapprove the Cooperative Education site<\/li>\n<li>Discuss learning objectives with students before the internship\/co-op begins<\/li>\n<li>Develop college-level learning objectives, academic assignments, and deadlines<\/li>\n<li>Discuss on-site visitations and final evaluation procedures<\/li>\n<li>Be certain that students understand the Cooperative Education course requirements, i.e. logs, journals, reports, and term papers<\/li>\n<li>Maintain contact with students for the duration of the Cooperative Education experience<\/li>\n<li>Contact the student&#8217;s supervisor at least once during the semester to check on the student&#8217;s progress<\/li>\n<li>Assign a grade for the student&#8217;s academic work<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate students on their overall performance at the end of the semester<\/li>\n<li>Act as a liaison to other faculty members in their school<\/li>\n<li>Supply internship leads to the Cooperative Education staff whenever possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Maintaining Academic Quality<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Cooperative Education (Co-op) is an academic course. The integrity of the co-op program is dependent upon faculty adherence to strong academic standards in the assessment of experiential learning. Goals and objectives are highly individualized and will naturally vary with each student, major, and job experience. Students will be placed at the level of their educational status and work experience.<\/p>\n<p>The faculty advisor is responsible for creating the appropriate level of learning through co-established learning objectives and academic assignments (journals, interviews, readings, etc.). Students receive two or four academic credits for meeting co-op requirements as well as the completion of the academic requirements included in the Co-op\/Internship Experience Request submitted to Handshake. \u00a0The co-op faculty advisor&#8217;s role is similar to the supervision of a student&#8217;s independent study or honors project.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Co-op\/Internship Experience Request<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Following procedures developed by the Cooperative Education Committee and administered by the Career Center staff, co-op faculty advisors, students, and employers approve a co-op\/internship experience request that consists of three parts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part A &#8211; Student<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>General student information<\/li>\n<li>The student&#8217;s proposed learning objectives as discussed with their co-op faculty advisor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Part B &#8211; Employer<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>General employment information, such as the job location, period of employment, salary, hours, supervisor&#8217;s name, address, and phone number, the student&#8217;s job title, with a description of the work-related activities and responsibilities known at that date<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Part C &#8211; Co-op Faculty Advisor<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The development of the learning objectives to be achieved during the co-op experience. The co-op faculty advisor often encourages the student to focus on educational objectives, including those that relate to personal, social, and career development. Students should consider the broad range of human learning: cognitive knowledge, technical and communication skills, and interpersonal relations. A finance student working at an investment firm might decide, for example, with the direction of the co-op faculty advisor, that the learning objectives for that placement should include an understanding of portfolio management, client needs assessment, and the integration of technology and finance.<\/li>\n<li>Academic requirements: Co-op faculty advisors often assign journals that describe learning, research papers, professional interviews, and a wide variety of projects that are conducive to evaluating and grading co-op students. See The Academic Assignment (below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Faculty Availability<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Co-op faculty advisors must make themselves available to students (through office hours and telephone\/email access) for completion of the co-op\/internship experience request before the beginning of the co-op assignment. Once a student is registered in a co-op faculty advisor&#8217;s course, a meeting must be arranged to discuss co-op academic requirements. In the first few weeks of the semester, extra efforts to provide this availability, particularly to evening students, are deeply appreciated by our students and the Cooperative Education staff.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>The Academic Assignment<\/h3>\n<p>The faculty advisor determines academic requirements that best suit a particular student. Depending on a student&#8217;s academic major, presentation of these requirements can take several forms. The following methods can be utilized to evaluate a student&#8217;s learning during a Cooperative Education placement:<\/p>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>The Journal<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>The journal is not only a log of activities, but the collection of thoughts and insights the activities produced. The journal allows students to express their work values and ethics about the organization in which they are employed. Students are encouraged to set daily\/weekly objectives and log their progress toward their objectives in the journal. Some faculty have found that a &#8220;Guided or Focused Journal&#8221; is more effective, in which students answer specific questions as well as describe their daily experiences. The following topics\/questions can be discussed\/answered in journal entries:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Describe your company; its mission, history, size, and customer base.<\/li>\n<li>Describe your workplace, department\/office: staffing, responsibility, and how it fits into the overall mission of the firm.<\/li>\n<li>Describe your responsibilities within your office &#8212; how they fit into general office goals. Describe your reporting line and the title of your supervisor.<\/li>\n<li>What is the formal reporting structure?<\/li>\n<li>How important is technology in your workplace? Are your skills adequate in this area?<\/li>\n<li>Is there an emphasis on teamwork in your workplace? Are you a team player? What skills should you acquire?<\/li>\n<li>How important are interpersonal skills? Communication skills? How do you feel your skills are in these areas?<\/li>\n<li>What role does the developing global economy play in your firm?<\/li>\n<li>What are the central marketing strategies used by your firm?<\/li>\n<li>Now that you have worked here for a short time, do you see an informal reporting structure that differs from the formal reporting structure?<\/li>\n<li>What classroom learning has helped you most in this position?<\/li>\n<li>How could Ramapo have better prepared you for the work world? How could the Career Center have better prepared you for this experience?<\/li>\n<li>If you could change your workplace, what changes would you make?<\/li>\n<li>Have your learning objectives changed at all over the semester?<\/li>\n<li>Summarize the learning that has taken place over the semester.<\/li>\n<li>What future learning\/education do you still need to acquire to be successful in this field?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Assigned Readings<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Assigned readings keep the learning process fresh and focused, explain trends in the field, and foster analytical thinking in current settings. Connections between selected readings and the workplace can be recorded in the journal or can inspire a thesis for a term paper.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Research Papers<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Papers provide an opportunity for faculty to shape student learning. Papers can also help students draw a connection between their Cooperative Education\/Academic Internship and its role in the global economy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Professional\/Informational Interviews<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Interviews allow students to explore the company structure and learn the importance of professional roles and functions within the company. Through interviews, students begin to understand career paths and the learning and credentials needed in a particular field. Informational Interview guidelines are available in the Career Center or by clicking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/careercenter\/interview\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Oral Presentations<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Oral presentations promote communication skills. They allow faculty a role in shaping a student&#8217;s professional demeanor in both verbal and non-verbal communication.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of Cooperative Education Projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>self-evaluation summary after the assignment<\/li>\n<li>portfolio of self-initiated projects<\/li>\n<li>company history<\/li>\n<li>oral presentation to the Cooperative Education faculty advisor, a class or an organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A professor from ASB uses the following as the academic component of a co-op position.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify student learning goals for the academic component of the co-op.<\/li>\n<li>Identify student workplace goals for the academic component of co-op (5-7 pages).<\/li>\n<li>Meet with the professor early in the semester to discuss workplace goals.<\/li>\n<li>Students keep daily\/weekly self-evaluation journals throughout the co-op monitoring progress toward achieving the workplace goals.<\/li>\n<li>Student summarizes the journal at mid-term and end-term in a 3-5 page memo report to the professor.<\/li>\n<li>Student conducts primary (interviews) and secondary (reading) research on the topic ( in question form) related to achieving learning goals for the academic component of Cooperative Education and submits a 10-12 page paper at the end of the semester.<\/li>\n<li>Student meets with the professor at the start of the semester to discuss academic and workplace goals, at mid-term to discuss first self-evaluation, and at other times as requested by the student.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Individual Meetings with Cooperative Education Students<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Faculty who require regular meetings better understand a student&#8217;s role and position in the placement. Meetings allow for any questions or concerns students may have with the placement or the learning process. Faculty get the opportunity to evaluate a student&#8217;s attitude and presentation skills, enabling them to see what the employer sees regularly. Individual meetings reinforce the academic component of the co-op. Some faculty elect to stay in touch with students via weekly or biweekly email exchanges.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Employer Evaluations<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>An employer&#8217;s evaluation of a student can be valuable in many ways. It can inform both the Career Center staff and the co-op faculty advisor of a job well done, timeliness, excessive absenteeism, inability to accomplish tasks properly or efficiently, or of a need to polish social or professional skills. It can help get a more accurate picture of the current co-op. Employer evaluations allow the employer to provide comments on student&#8217;s academic and professional participation as well as on Ramapo&#8217;s academic preparation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Site Visits<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Co-op faculty advisors are strongly encouraged to visit the work site and communicate with a student&#8217;s site supervisor for several reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To monitor student learning in a co-op position<\/li>\n<li>To better understand the environment in which the student is placed<\/li>\n<li>To understand student expectations<\/li>\n<li>To strengthen the partnership between 69色情视频 and the community<\/li>\n<li>To assess future opportunities for other Ramapo students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Career Center staff members are available to accompany co-op faculty advisors on-site visits if requested.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Grading and Evaluation<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>The co-op faculty advisor assigns a grade which is often a composite grade combining employer evaluations, completion of academic assignments, and progress toward co-established learning objectives. Although grading is an individual matter, many co-op faculty advisors have reported they use a similar formula to that below:<\/p>\n<p>________ progress toward objectives: 25%<br \/>\n________ academic course assignment(s): 50%<br \/>\n________ employer evaluation: 25%<\/p>\n<p>Many advisors use combinations of the above-mentioned projects and methods of evaluation. Some evaluate their students&#8217; learning in creative ways not mentioned. It is entirely an individual matter.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Reflection<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Co-op faculty advisors should meet with their co-op students at the end of each semester of co-op to discuss the overall co-op outcomes. These debriefing sessions may be used to encourage the appropriate integration of experiential learning with the student&#8217;s educational and career goals. The first meeting is crucial because learning objectives and academic requirements will be discussed as established in the co-op\/internship experience request. The second meeting, scheduled for mid-semester, enables the faculty to see how well a student is progressing toward those learning objectives and allows the student to express any questions or concerns with the placement. The third meeting, scheduled for the end of the semester, provides an opportunity for reflection. Students and faculty are also encouraged to correspond with each other by email or telephone throughout the semester.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I determine learning objectives?<\/strong><br \/>\nEach set of learning objectives will be unique for each student depending on the student&#8217;s major, internship\/co-op, and the student&#8217;s role within the company. The main objective of the program is to promote the application of classroom learning as well as the retention and application of new hands-on learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should I make site visits?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes. The faculty advisor is strongly encouraged to make site visits whenever possible. The Career Center staff will be available to join the faculty on-site visits as requested. However, if time constraints exist, the faculty can call or email site supervisors as a secondary method of &#8220;visiting&#8221; a site. The site visit is another opportunity for faculty to ascertain a student&#8217;s job performance. Should a faculty advisor learn of a problem with a placement, the Career Center staff must be contacted immediately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How should I formulate a grade?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe co-op faculty advisor assigns a grade, which is often a composite grade combining employer evaluations, assessment of academic assignments, and progress toward co-established learning objectives. Pay schedules are determined by the Office of Academic Affairs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can a faculty member act as both the advisor AND employer for a co-op student?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. Faculty members hiring co-op students for specific projects, research, field study, etc., and sign off as the EMPLOYER cannot also sign off as the CO-OP FACULTY ADVISOR due to inherent conflict of interest.
